Bruxism (Jaw Clenching)
When small amounts of Botox (botulinum toxin) are injected directly into the masseter muscle (in the jaw), the muscle becomes weak enough to stop teeth grinding and jaw clenching. This makes the muscle much more relaxed and lessens the wear and tear on the teeth caused by bruxism, which is the act of clenching or grinding the teeth.
If you tend to grind your teeth, you have bruxism, which is a medical term for the condition. This uncontrollable behaviour can be very annoying, and it may even be giving you jaw pain, headaches, sensitive gums, worn tooth enamel, or chipped teeth. If you've tried more traditional ways to stop this behaviour and been disappointed with the results, it may come as a surprise to learn that botulinum toxin has been shown to work as a treatment for teeth grinding.
Really? Botulinum Toxin for Jaw Clenching?
Most people are familiar with botulinum toxin to get rid of wrinkles or plump up lips. But recent studies published in Neurology and Pain Research and Management have shown that botulinum toxin's muscle-relaxing properties show promise in stopping jaw clenching and teeth grinding. At least for some time.
According to a study that was published in the Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal, there is evidence that botulinum toxin could help treat more than just teeth grinding. Botulinum toxin temporarily makes muscles weak, so it can also be used to treat conditions in the head and face, like facial dystonia, where muscles need to relax.
How does Botox for teeth grinding / Bruxism work?
When botulinum toxin for bruxism, a small amount is injected into the muscles that move your jaw. Most likely, this is the masseter muscle, which moves when you chew. Depending on your needs, it can also be injected into the frontalis and temporalis muscles. Botulinum toxin will stop you from clenching your teeth, and it will also help with any tension or aches in your head that come with it. Botulinum toxin usually starts working 1–3 days after being injected, but it can take up to 2 weeks. The effects could last 3–6 months..
GUMMY SMILE

In the next 3–10 days, your upper lip will start to move down, and your new smile will start to look different. You'll show less gum, and you'll feel much more comfortable smiling without holding back. After two weeks, we'll know for sure if the treatment worked.
